Alicante has the best of the blue flag beaches in Spain this year according to 20 minutos newspaper. A total of 527 blue flags have been awarded for the country’s beaches and marinas for this summer, some 49 fewer than last year. 455 are for beaches and 72 are for marinas.

Cataluña is the autonomous region with most flags, 112, which recognise the water quality and beach facilities on offer at each location. Galicia follows with 105 and then Valencia with 100.

Spain continues to lead the list as the country with the most blue flag beaches in the world.

Special awards have been granted for life-saving and first aid provisions in Villaviciosa in Asturias and Gandía in Valencia.

Benidorm has lost its blue flag from the Poniente beach this year, and La Vila has lost all the flags it had. It’s because of work on the paseo maritimo. There are 44 along the entire Costa Blanca this year.

17 beaches and four marinas have won the award in Málaga province this year. Meanwhile it has been revealed that beach showers in Málaga are to be switched off at 8pm this summer, to save water.
