The long awaited second runway at the Murcia-San Javier Airport is due to open this October, according to a report in the La Verdad newspaper. The reports source is Cecilio Hernández, a member of the PSRM-PSOE Socialist Party who is responsibile for infrastructure.
The runway itself was completed some years ago, but is still awaiting the completion of work on the new control tower. Once this work has been completed the passenger terminal will be able to operate 24 hours a day. Currently the aiport is unable to offer a 24 hour service, as a military air base the airport is used by for military training flights, once the second runway is open this would no longer be the case.
Thanks to its ever increasing popularity as a tourist destination coupled with the arrival of several low cost airlines, Murcia Airport has become much busier.
According to Aena, passenger numbers have increased dramatically, in 2004 848,037 passengers used the airport while in 2007 just under two million people arrived on more than 20,000 flights.
